Here is my list of books that describe the military experience, that I’ve read and will recommend to anyone who wants to know more about the military.
This list will be continually updated and expanded – let me know if you have any recommended additions!
With the Old Breed: At Peleliu and Okinawa E.B. Sledge’s stunning account of life as Marine during the island hopping campaign of the Pacific Theater. This is one of my favorite war memoir’s. Haunting, powerful, must-read for all Americans who want to know more about the Greatest Generation.
Low Level Hell:Great read from Hugh Mills (OH-6 Pilot during Vietnam) about what went on just above the tree tops in Vietnam. Must read for any aviation enthusiast.
First to Fight: Pure United States Marine Corps propaganda! No, really this is a great inside look into the USMC from its founding up until the Gulf War. The first part on the fight to save the USMC is a bit dry, but once you make it through the legislative battles of post WWII fame, it holds your attention.
